JING'AN TEMPLE AREA 静安寺
This area takes Jing'an Temple as its geographical center and Nanjing Road (W.) 南京西路 as its main thoroughfare. Before liberation, this area used to be looked upon as a residential area for upper-class people. Up to now this area still remains one of the busiest commercial areas in whole Shanghai.
Another feature of this area is that there are many beautiful and influential buildings there. On some branch roads in this area, Shi Ku Men, one of the traditional architectural styles of houses in Shanghai, can be easily seen. New-type Long Tang (lane) can also be found here and there.
This area also features rich culture. Majestic Theatre, Paramount, Ping'an Motion Cinema, The Experimental Theatre of Shanghai Drama Academy, Yunfeng Theatre, Jing'an Park and Xikang Park are the most representative cultural facilities.
In the west of Nanjing Road (W.) 南京西路 are situated Jing'an Temple, Jing'an Park and Jing'an Temple Square.
JING'AN TEMPLE 静安寺
Located at the crossing of Nanjing Road (W.) 南京西路 and Huashan Road 华山路, one of the busiest centers in Shanghai, Jing'an Temple is a nation-famous monastery. It is said that the temple was first built as early as 247 A.D., the 10th year of King Sun Quan of the Eastern Wu State during the Three Kingdoms Period. However, having been destroyed in the war-ridden years between 1851 and 1861, the original temple no longer exists. The present temple was rebuilt in 1880 during the reign of Qing Emperor Guangxu with the help of lots of donations. Since liberation, Jing'an Temple has been renovated many times. Jing'an Temple houses a great number of historical and cultural relics of high value, including a big bell cast in the Ming Dynasty, a stone figure of Buddha sculptured in the Northern and Southern Dynasties and a few paintings and calligraphy works by well-known masters such as Zhu Zhisan, Wu Changshuo, Wen Zhengming and Zhang Daqian.
